On this webpage, we will go over the simple filing procedure necessary for business representatives looking to reserve their corporate name prior to filing. In this particular state, filers will find that there exists no online filing system and that the appropriate PDF of the reservation form will need to be filled out and submitted by mail, or uploaded onto the website. Regardless of the manner of delivery, filers can expect the fee of $30 which will cover all costs. Once the reservation has been reviewed and approved, your name will be reserved for a period of no more than 120 days.
Before we begin, we suggest that you perform a Business Entity Search to ensure that the name you plan on reserving hasn’t already been registered by another business in North Carolina. This will not guarantee that the name can be used. However, it will give a fairly accurate demonstration of its availability.
How to Reserve
Step 1- To begin filing, you must first download the Application to Reserve a Business Entity Name and open it up in your PDF viewer.
Step 2- The following information will be required whether you are registering a partnership, a corporation or an LLC:
- 1-The name to be reserved
- 2-Applicant’s name
- 3-Applicant’s address
- Entity name
- Printed/typed name and title of position within business
Step 3- If you’ve opted to file through the mail, you will be required to attach a check made out to the Secretary of State for $30. You will be able to send both items to the below address to complete your filing. If you’d like to submit your documents online, follow the Steps 4-8.
PO Box 29622

Step 4- For those submitting their PDF online, the process is simple. Navigate first to this webpage on which you will be able to enter your login credentials. You will need to have first created an online account with the Secretary of State, Corporations Division website. A tutorial on how to do so can be found here.
Step 5- Once logged in, the menu on the left hand side should change. You will notice under the PDF FILING heading, there will be an Upload a New Name Reservation link.
Step 6- The information required is as follows:
- Entity name
- Has entity been created in another state or country (yes/no)
- Entity type
- Document type
- Customer reference number (optional)
- Expedite (yes/no)
Step 7- Submitting a filing will simply involve checking off the bubble in the far left hand column.
Step 8- The payment for the fee will then emerge and you will be able to indicate the payment type and submit your email address before clicking Pay & Submit. It’s that simple. Good luck!
