If you plan on forming a business or applying for authority to transact business in the state of Maine you may wish to reserve your business name before doing so. This is especially useful if you don’t plan on immediately filing and you’d like a window of time in which you can rest assured that your name will not be registered by another entity. A filing of this nature will only cost you $20 and can be executed by submitting the form MBCA-1 to the office of the Secretary of State. To expedite your filing, you can either submit an additional $50 for 24 hour service or $100 for immediate processing. Once the reservation has been approved you will be granted a period of 120 days in which to file your application/formation documents. It is crucial that you submit the necessary paperwork in the allotted time as this period is not renewable. The state statutes surrounding name reservations can be found here in Title 13, Section 402.
