Reserving a business name in the state of Alabama is required as the very first step when registering the majority of entity types. To reserve a name the applicant will need to submit either the PDF application by mail or fax, or file online. The reserved entity name is valid for up to one year before it will no longer be valid. There is an associated filing fee for reserving an entity name in Alabama, this fee is $28. The reservation of an entity name must be done in accordance with Section 10A-1-5.11 of the Alabama State Statute.

When making the filing it is best to first use the Business Name Search option at the Secretary of State website. This process will allow you to lookup any name that you desire to see if it has been taken or if it is available for your use. After checking the database and ensuring that the name you have selected for your entity is available for usage, you may begin the process of reserving your entity name.
